THE EAGLE OF THE CITY OF BARCELONA 20240529181231PUB

The Eagle of Barcelona is a figure that forms part of the Historical Bestiary. Together with the Giants of the City, it is the maximum protocol representative of Barcelona. The history of the figure dates back to the 14th century and was already documented then. But the most splendid time was lived in the 16th and 17th centuries, when it participated in official ceremonies, events or parties attended by any member of the Municipal Council representing the city. He also had the privilege of dancing in churches and paraded in front of the Custodia in the Corpus Christi procession.
The Barcelona Eagle that we have today was built by the image artist Xavier Jansana in 1998. Previously, there had been another one, from 1989, made by Manel Caserras i Boix during the process of recovering the festive imagery of the Old City. The Plaça Nova Festivals Association took responsibility for it and it was presented that same year in August, for the Sant Roc de la Plaça Nova festivities. The old Àliga, which was remodeled on more than one occasion, is currently the Arpella of the Gothic quarter.
Since 1993, he has been part of the Seguici Popular de Barcelona, and even today he heads the bestiary, alongside the city’s Lion.
Location: Barcelona, Catalonia, Southern Europe.
